There many VCS that you can use aside from Git and Subversion. If you are already using GitHub, there's no problem about it, since if you will compare Subversion and Git in terms of branching and merging, it's quite better. However, if you are only a one-man group administering, Subversion is already fine in terms of functionality.
There are two repository you can use in Subversion, FSFS and Berkeley DB. Better to use FSFS rather than Berkeley DB, cause there are limitations using Berkeley DB. You might experience data loss and corruption when there is a problem accessing the database like force termination and database crash, so the only solution here is to have a backup repository.

Just a thought, maybe industries are just wedded to Subversion that's is why they stick to it. Ofcourse, it will still quite easier at first using SVN, but when you become pro on it, Git would perform better. =)

I haven't use any of them, I only have an idea, but I already saw Mercurial and BitKeeper. You might also want to explore it..

We're are not yet using this repository of sources for our project, maybe soon we will deploy it. We don't have yet major projects from the past that's why were are not using it.

Thanks sir. This is exactly the information I need. We are using private Git repositoriies since my cousin lives in the province, and the other one on the other side of the world. I'm happy using it since commiting then pushing is easy, I'm just curious about SVN which 'came' first. Very Happy

Lots of open source projects today are switching from SVN to distributed VCS like Git and Mercurial.

For myself, I use Git. Mercurial have similar features, but I dunno, I just prefer Git. Well my only advice is this: if you're a programmer, USE A VCS. You'll be glad you did.

Renaming folders and files and zipping is not version control. Razz
